Bisous by Princesse tam.tam for AW14
We might be sizzling in summer temperatures at the moment, but the new collections hitting the shops are already looking ahead to the Autumn/Winter season, and lingerie is no exception. And a recurring theme in those collections is design that takes its inspiration from decades gone by.
That’s not to say that this winter we’ll all be wearing bullet bras and girdles. But lingerie brands are increasingly taking colour, shape, pattern and detailing inspiration from past eras and reinterpreting them in distinctly modern collections.
Two great examples of this contemporary vintage style are the new season collections from two French lingerie brands, Aubade and Princesse tam.tam. Both brands have their own distinct aesthetic and have taken their inspiration from different times and places, yet both blend subtle retro touches with modern styling and construction techniques to create beautifully up-to-date collections with a nod to the past.
Left to right: Fleurs de Pommier and Woodstock Memories by Aubade for AW14
For Aubade, the inspiration was the Swinging Sixties, sexual liberation and the emancipated woman, and the collection is high on sex appeal with a touch of eroticism in the black leather and metallic detailing. There’s also a healthy dose of pop culture in prints that combine bold colours with Sixties’ motifs such as psychedelic florals and geometric patterns. And yet the collection retains all the elegance and femininity that is Aubade’s signature style.

Princesse tam.tam, on the other hand, is inspired by everything from Art Deco swimming pools to Fifties flair, combining the brand’s minimalist modern style with retro prints, feminine pastels and splashes of bright colour in a sleek, flirtatious collection. American entertainer Josephine Baker, who become a hugely popular star in France in the 1920s, is another key inspiration, reflected in a subtle touch of vintage glamour.
The first styles from Aubade’s new collection will start to arrive in stores from August and will also be available from the brand’s website Aubade.co.uk. Some early new lines from Princesse tam.tam are already available via Princessetamtam.co.uk and the rest will be released in the coming months.
