At Fashion Bust we’re not ashamed to say that we’re shapewear devotees. And why not? Designed to smooth, flatter and enhance your natural shape, what’s not to love about shapewear? It has come such as long since the days of the Bridget Jones knickers; nowadays shapewear can be sexy, lightweight and part of your everyday wardrobe.
Shapewear is the perfect foundation for any outfit, and a lifesaver when it comes to figure hugging numbers. You can buy garments with different levels of control – from light to max shaping – allowing you to tailor your purchases to your outfit or comfort requirements.
In fact, the only downside to shapewear these days is that there are so many amazing brands to choose from, and that’s a downside we’re happy to live with. For those of you who need a little help navigating the market, here is the Fashion Bust guide to your shapewear essentials.
The control brief has to be our absolute mainstay. Look for styles that are laser cut or feature flat seams around leg openings as this helps to ensure no dreaded VPL or uncomfortable cutting in. And when it comes to the waist, you have a choice of deep, high or higher, which can come right up to under your rib cage. It all depends on your shape and what you find comfortable. Personally, we like the middle ground when it comes to waistline. Here are some styles we like:
Left to right: Yummie Tummie Seamlessly Shaped Cotton Karen Brief, £21, Figleaves.com, Triumph Amazing Sensation Panty Girdle, £40, Triumph, and Freya Deco High-Waisted Shaping Brief, £20, Figleaves.com
The thigh slimmer
No one ever said the thigh slimmer was an attractive garment, but you should have one in wardrobe nonetheless. These can achieve a smooth silhouette under a tight fitting dress or jeans – although we find them more comfortable and effective under looser fitting trousers than tight ones – and can even give your confidence a boost under a summer dress. You can buy them in different lengths, different waist heights and all manner of weights and thicknesses, and you can even buy pieces that claim to work on your cellulite while you wear them. Here’s a few we like:
Left to right: Wacoal iPant anti-cellulite thigh slimmer, £49, Selfridges.com, Scandale High-Waisted shapewear briefs, £35, asos.com, and Wolford’s Light Forming Capri Pants, £82, Wolfordshop.co.uk.
The shaping body
Now, not everyone can wear the body, and those with long torsos might be better off choosing a shaping top and briefs, but if you can wear them, you’re in for a treat because there are some gorgeous control bodies on the market right now. They are a great alternative to high-waisted briefs if you are worried about these slipping down, and cup sized bodies can support your bust as they streamline your figure. Here are some of our favourites:
From left to right: This pretty Chantelle body costs £110 from Figleaves.com, for super shaping try Miraclesuit’s Rigid Front Strapless Body, £46.50 from Loveshapewear.co.uk, and for cute retro style and versatility right up to 46DD, try Gok Wan’s Strapless Multiway Bodyshaper, £34 from Simplyyours.co.uk.
The Wear Your Own Bra top
You may have spent a long time finding just the right style and size of bra, and that’s why the WYOB top is such a great piece of kit – you don’t need to compromise on fit and support because you can wear your own bra with your shapewear. You can get WYOB tops, bodies, slips and even unitards should you so wish, and we highly recommend them. Some brands to consider include:
Left to right: Black Under Bust Shaping Bodysuit, £32, Debenhams, Flexees by Maidenform Easy Up Torsette, £40, Figleaves.com, and the Simplicity Open Bust Boost Camisole, £72, Spanx.
We love the shaping slip! More than any other item of shapewear, except perhaps the body, the slip can be really sexy, and there is nothing better to wear under your figure-hugging dress on a night out than a slip that smooths your silhouette to perfection. You can get underwired slips so you don’t have to wear a bra as well, or you can choose an open bust WYOB style. And this garment is also great for brides on their big day.
Left to right: Esprit Feel Solitaire Shapewear Dress, £40, Asos.com, Yummie Tummie Romie Lace Slip, £95 from Figleaves.com, and designed especially for wedding days, Body Wrap Bride’s Bridal Lace Multiway Bra Slip, £61.95 from Shapewear.co.uk
