The last few years it seems like our obsession with all thing vintage has grown and grown. And our passion for the styles of past eras has arguably found its greatest expression in lingerie, as everything from pin-up Hollywood glamour to Art Deco patterns, heritage prints and Twenties’ elegance has inspired designer after designer.
There truly are some beautiful things out there in the lingerie world that pay homage to every decade of the 20th century and even further back, whether you are looking for corsets, bullet bras, silk robes or classic nylons. But we also love how the vintage aesthetic has entered the mainstream with modern interpretations, making a little bit of old school glamour accessible to all of us. Here are some of our top choices for wearable vintage-inspired style that won’t break the bank.
Marks & Spencer
The Rosie for Autograph collection designed for M&S by model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has always had a vintage flavour. We’ve always loved the elegant colours and antique floral prints, and this is especially true of the latest anniversary collection. In fact we’ve got a massive crush on this silk non-padded balcony bra in olive – it also comes in dusted mauve and dove grey – and cute high-waisted lace trimmed knickers. And we love the price even more. The bra, which comes in 32-38 B-E, is a bargain at £25, and the knickers, sizes 6-20, cost just £12.50. Buy in store or online at marksandspencer.com/rosie.
An original vintage French brand that relaunched with a modern take on its rich heritage a year ago, Scandale has taken the shapes and curves of its mid-century heyday and transformed these into a shaping lingerie collection that it describes as ‘chic, cosmetic lingerie’. Attention to detail and a desire to make shapewear both wearable and attractive lie at the heart of this brand, and popular shapes include the shaping dress, body and suspender skirt. The collection also includes high-waisted shaping briefs, wear-your-own-bra camisole tops and a selection of bra styles. We love this cup-sized body in metallic grey, black or gold. It comes in sizes 32A-38F and costs £55 from Zalando.co.uk.
Fuller figure specialist Elomi is another brand that has always had a strong vintage streak, combining pin up glamour with cuts and shapes designed to fit and flatter curves. In the past we’ve hankered after Betty’s cute polka dots but we may have found a new favourite line in Renee. Already available in black, this deep knicker and bra set is based on a vintage floral print and is launching in vibrant red in September and we’re making it an official Fashion Bust top buy for the season! Priced from £42, the banded bra comes in sizes 34 G-JJ, 36-42 E-JJ and 44 E-G. The briefs, from £20, come in sizes M-4XL. Visit Elomilingerie.com for stockists.
Kelly Brook for New Look
For a retro look on a budget, Kelly Brook’s black balconette bra and deep brief set for New Look is a winner. The simple, graphic style is the epitome of retro cool and we love the black with pink trim colourway. The sateen balconette bra comes in 32-36 B-F and the briefs in 8-14. Even better, you can pick up the set for less than £25 from New Look.
For the past few seasons, Gossard has been raiding its archives for beautiful vintage prints and bringing them back to life with a modern interpretation. For Autumn/Winter 2013, the result is Felicity, a cute little collection of lingerie and nightwear inspired by a floral print from the 1850s and brought up to date with an on-trend aqua trim. There’s a chemise and camisole set as well as the plunge bra and shorts and you can buy the whole collection from Gossard.com. The plunge bra costs £34 and comes in sizes 30-38 A-G while the shorts cost £14 and come in XS-L.
