Shapewear is sexy. Some people might disagree – and we’ll admit that not every nude thigh slimmer is a garment to incite desire – but as we’re approaching the festive season with its seemingly endless parties and social engagements, now is the perfect time to show you how can help your figure withstand the booze and mince pies while still looking and feeling gorgeous. And undress without worrying about what he’s going to think of your undies.
So, without further ado, here’s our rundown of the Fashion Bust sexy shapewear essentials.
The slender waist
The hourglass figure has become a bit of a media obsession over the last couple of years as our love affair with the retro look continues, but sadly few of us are born with the perfect hourglass shape. But, never fear, shapewear is here!
For the ultimate in a waspish waist there’s nothing like a corset, but if you want something more everyday there are plenty of waist-cinching solutions out there. For greatest effect, choose something that is concentrating its control around the waist area, like a waist-nipper (Maidenform has a great selection), and if you want a more all-over effect choose a torselette or a body.
Left: La Figurelle is on a mission to make shapewear glamorous and feminine and that’s exactly how we would describe the collection. For a lovely shapely silhouette, try this Ciel underbust corselette. It comes in S-XXL and costs 72 Euros from La Figurelle.
Centre: Esbelt’s Ipanema corset might look rather plain, but that’s what’s so great about it. Sleek, simple and very effective, this is one to wear when you want a true hourglass effect. Available in XS-4XL from £33.25 from Amazon.co.uk. Or you could enter our giveaway to win one!
Right: Scandale’s new Encore collection is just beautiful with its vintage inspiration and pretty lace trim. This corselette won’t give you the dramatic definition of a true corset, but it will create smooth curves. It is sized from 32A-38E and costs £75. Buy from Asos.com.
The body is back
Bodies were a massive trend in the Nineties but they are back in a big way and have come on a long way since they were first in fashion. Now bodies are uber cool and shapewear bodies are no exception.
The body is a great shapewear garment because it covers the whole torso and you don’t have to worry about it rolling down. Choose an open bust body if you want to wear you own bra, or a body with a built in bra if you want the simplicity of one garment.
Left: We were hard pressed to choose just one Triumph body from the brand’s amazing Sensations collection, but in the end it was the bold retro colours of this Cotton-Feel Sensation underwired body that decided us. 34B-38D, £70 from Triumph. (If you’re looking for something in black, we recommend the brand’s Amazing Sensation body).
Middle: The Alara string forming body from Wolford is one of several new shaping bodies coming soon from brand as Wolford focuses its lingerie collection towards shape and control wear. We love the sheer look in this bright scarlet. Keep an eye out for it on Wolfordshop.co.uk.
Right: DMondaine’s Ginger thong bodysuit is designed to slim without diminishing your curves, and has a built in non-wired bra but you could also wear it with a bra if you wanted. A great, versatile garment with stylish panelling. Also available in black. It is sized from XS-L and costs £162 from Net-a-Porter.com.
The shaping slip
The shapewear slip is the ultimate garment for wearing under your party dress as it slims you from bust to thighs – ideal for those bodycon dresses (or even as a bodycon dress, if you’re feeling very brave).
Left: This dress is another piece from Scandale’s Encore collection because it is just so pretty. Available in sizes 32-38 B-E for £95 from Figleaves.com.
Middle: Freya launched its Deco Shape range only last season with the aim of creating shapewear that doesn’t look like shapewear. This strapless slip is the perfect example. Sized from 32-36 D-GG, you can buy it for £55 from Leia Lingerie.
Right: You know that shapewear is trending when the big high street players are producing their own stylish designs. We think this Mesh Panel Slip from Next is a great entry level shapewear slip. It costs just £30 and comes in sizes 32-38 A-DD. Buy from Next.
The high-waisted brief
When it comes to big knickers, it’s all a matter of perception. On the one hand, high-waisted vintage style briefs are considered the height of cool, whereas shapewear briefs tend to bring back memories of that scene from the Bridget Jones film. So start thinking of your shapewear briefs as sexy retro styles with the added benefit of a bit of tummy control and problem solved!
Left: A little feminine detailing transforms these Berlei Free Lace shapewear briefs into pretty knickers. They come in sizes S-XL and right now you can pick them up at the reduced price of £26 from Berlei.
Middle: Chantelle’s new Galuchat range includes these high-waisted briefs with a gorgeous metallic central panel. Metallics are a big trend this season, so with these pants on you’re guaranteed to be cool. Available from S-4XL for £28 from undercoverexperience.co.uk.
Right: If in doubt, go lace. These Light Sensation high-waisted briefs from Triumph disguise their control properties behind delicate floral lace. Available in S-L for £32 from Figleaves.com.
Right, so that should be your party season shapewear sorted. If there’s anything we haven’t covered here – or a brand you think we’ve missed out – please leave us a comment.
