In our maternity and nursing lingerie shoot, we wanted to put to bed the misconception that when you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you have to make do with functional, unattractive lingerie. So we picked some of our favourite brands to showcase the different style choices available. But we also know that comfort and functionality is so important during this time, so we asked our model Emma Rice to put the bras to the test. Find out what she thought of them.

Polka dot nursing bra by Anita Maternity
This pretty non-wired nursing bra has foam cups that conceal breast pads and comfortable, padded and adjustable straps. Nursing clips allow easy access for breastfeeding. Launches in black early 2014.
£36.95 www.expectingmaternity.co.uk, sizes 32-42 B-E, 32-40 F, 32-38 G. For more stockists see Anita’s website.
Emma says: ‘This is one of my favourites from the shoot. It’s really comfortable and the fabric is lovely and it also fits me really well. I think it suits my shape. I don’t like wearing non-wired bras because I don’t like the shape they give me under clothes, and if I wasn’t pregnant I wouldn’t wear one, but I think this one looks nice on me. I also like the fact that while it is soft and practical, it is also very pretty.’
Emma Janes Maternity Kate seamfree maternity and nursing bra
This seamfree maternity and nursing bra is part of Emma Jane’s Next Generation range that is designed to grow with your body, so you don’t need to keep buying new bras. Soft, comfortable and supportive, the bra has a ruched centre, wide and comfy underband and nursing clips. Available in blue or fuchsia pink.
£14 www.maternity2nursing.com, sizes 34-38 one cup size fits B-F cups. For more stockists see Emma Jane’s website.
Emma says: ‘This is one of the most comfortable bras I have ever worn. At the moment I’m finding that most bras are digging in under my bust and above my bump, but this one doesn’t because it sits really low and is so soft. I’ve got no marks at the end of the day. My only complaint is that I wish it came in nude or white as well as blue and pink for those days when you need a more subtle colour, but regardless, I’m keeping this one!’ (And she did).
Amoralia Second Skin Organic nursing bra
Amoralia’s Second Skin Organic collection is made from GOTS certified organic cotton. It’s soft, breathable and designed to offer the ultimate in comfort. It also has a deep front so it’s great for wearing with wrap dresses and v neck tops. Available in berry (pictured), denim blue and ivory.
£35 www.amoralia.com, sizes 32-38 B-E. Stockissts include Kiddicare. For more see Amoralia’s website.
Emma says: ‘I feel very well supported in this bra. It’s not underwired but the twist front and (removable) moulded pads give me a nice shape and firm support – you also get an added layer of leakage protection from the pads, which is a bonus! It’s also really comfy and the colour is lovely. Plus it comes with matching briefs, and I always like to match.’
Royce Lingerie Lauren nursing bra
This one of Royce’s best-selling nursing bras and has just been released in a pretty vintage-inspired floral print with lace trim. Lauren is a customer favourite for its great shape, support and comfort.
£28 www.royce-lingerie.co.uk, 32-38 D-H. To find a nearby stockist, visit the Royce Lingerie website.
Emma says: ‘This is such pretty print and looks lovely on – nice to see a bit of lace on a maternity bra! I wish it came with matching briefs though. I think I would probably want to wear breast pads with this bra, but only for the reassurance of an added layer. It gives a really great shape and is very supportive.’
Bravado Designs Sublime nursing bra
Suitable for pregnancy and nursing, the Sublime bra is made from pretty lace with a soft cotton lining and the fabric is stretchy to accommodate changing breast size. The bra comes in dual cup sizes and fits up to a K cup with drop down nursing clips. It’s available in a choice of black cherry (pictured), French vanilla, chai and black/purple.
£32.40, www.nursingbra-shop.co.uk, sizes 32-38 B/C to GG/H. For more stockists, visit Bravado’s website.
Emma says: ‘This bra manages to combine practical features with a sexy look. It doesn’t have as much support at the side as some of the other bras, but also doesn’t seem to need it as I still have a nice shape, and actually this means it is really comfy. This is a good choice if you want to feel a bit special.’
Cake Lingerie Dark Chocolate bra
This beautiful black embroidered cotton balcony bra uses a special flexible underwire for added shape and support without discomfort. The cups are soft for comfort and drop down for breastfeeding, and the back has six hook and eye adjustments.
£38, www.cakelingerie.com, 32-38 C-GG, 40 D-GG. For more stockists, see Cake Lingerie’s website.
Emma says: ‘Possibly the sexiest bra of the lot, and I love that it has an underwire and matching briefs. Very supportive and a good fit.’
JoJo Maman Bebe lace trim maternity and nursing bra
This is a great versatile maternity and nursing bra for smaller cup sizes. It has flexible fit cups that fit B-DD and has five hook and eye adjustments to ensure you can wear it in comfort throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Available in black or white.
£14 www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk, M-XXL (32-40), one B-DD cup fitting. For store location’s, see the JoJo Maman Bebe website.
Emma says: ‘This is a nice, pretty bra that would work well as a practical everyday bra, but you can also dress it up and make it really sexy. It’s quite high coverage so it might not be suitable for lower cut tops, but it has lovely lace detailing on the cups and it’s really great value.’
Lorna Drew Alexa nursing bra
This popular satin nursing bra comes in sexy leopard print this season. Designed to provide support and lift, the cups adjust by up to three cup sizes to accommodate changes in breast size while breastfeeding. The briefs are also cut to fit to fit two dress sizes. The Alexa bra can be worn from four months into pregnancy and throughout breastfeeding, and also comes in ice blue and white.
£39 www.lornadrew.com, 30-38 B-J. For stockist, visit the Lorna Drew website.
Emma says: ‘The cut and fit of this bra are really comfortable on me; the fabric is great and I love the matching briefs. I also like the fact that it has been cleverly designed to be a little sexy. The drop down clips are a little chunky, but I can see that this would be a fantastic breastfeeding bra.’
