There is a perception that wirefree and soft cup bras are for more mature or pregnant women where comfort is more important than style. But that’s simply not the case. Many women of all ages find underwires uncomfortable, or just have days when they prefer non-wired bras, but still want the shape, support and style of an underwire. However, while there are plenty of casual lacy bralets and sexy little triangle bras out there without wires, finding a good (and good-looking) wirefree alternative to a structured underwired bra can be challenging – but it is getting less so.
Lingerie brands are cottoning on to the fact that soft cup bras are in demand and many are now providing non-wired styles as part of their ranges. Yes, many wirefree bras do still fall into the ‘comfy, mumsy’ category or are marketed as maternity bras (although there’s no reason you can’t wear these as everyday bras if you want to) but there are more and more modern, stylish soft cups out there that should appeal to the occasional or everyday wirefree bra wearer who wants looks, shape and support as well as comfort. Here are six of our favourites.
Gossard is the latest fashion lingerie brand to bring out a wirefree design, and its Super Smooth plunge bra offers all the brand’s famous lift and support with the comfort of a non-wired construction. The deep underband ensures comfort and a secure fit under the bust that allows the bra to maintain its shape while the plunging cups add the cleavage. It comes in a choice of black or blush.

This is another brand new bra, launched just this week in fact. It has been developed by M&S specially for DD to G cup sizes and replaces the traditional underwire with compression foam technology in moulded cups to provide a similar level of shape and support. The striped cups are trimmed with pretty lace, which extends around the wide wings and back for a smoothing effect.
Buy: £22.50, sizes 32-40 DD-G. M&S.
Freya introduced a moulded soft cup bra into its ever popular Deco range a couple of years ago, and it proved a winner. If you’re looking for a supportive wirefree bras that gives a good shape in larger cup sizes, this may be the one for you as it is available up to a G cup. Currently black or nude only.
Buy: £27, sizes 28-38 C-G. Figleaves.com.
Royce Lingerie only make wirefree bras so this is a good brand to check out if you prefer to wear soft cup styles most of the time. There are a variety of designs available, from traditional to more modern looks, and we like the Charlotte bra for its simple styling and contemporary mesh panels. It fits high on the cup and is designed for DD plus.
Buy: £24, sizes 28 DD-J, 30-40 DD-K. Royce Lingerie.
For smaller busted women, the new Full Bloom wirefree bra from Wacoal is a pretty and supportive style. It comes in all-over lace in either natural or purple with a cute pink trim. The soft, comfy underband is designed to fit securely and the stretch straps are adjustable to fit. A great bra for all-day comfort.
Buy: £26, sizes 32 B-D, 34-36 A-D, 38 B-D. Figleaves.com.
Another pretty non-wired style is Lyla from Lepel. Structured to look just like an underwired bra, it is supportive and provides a good shape plus it has some lovely little feminine touches, in particular the lace-trimmed underband, that ensure this bra is not just about comfort.
