If this summer of sport, and the recent home nations success at the Commonwealth Games, has inspired you to get serious about your health and fitness (or you’re already an avid exercise fan), there are some great new innovations in sports bras that are really worth a look.
Sports bra are an essential part of any woman’s workout wardrobe – possible the most essential part and certainly the starting point. So many women avoid exercise because of breast pain, but it doesn’t have to hurt. A well-fitted, well made sports bra can transform your comfort levels and there are now so many different brands, styles and colours out there that there really should be something to suit all tastes.
As we enter the new season, here are some of the new and soon-to-be-released sports bras that have caught our eye.
A brand new style from sports bra experts Shock Absorber is the Active Shaped Support bra. It’s a bra that combines looks – its own and the wearer’s – with maximum support for high impact workouts. Attractively styled in deep purple overlaid with black and a bright lime trim, this sports bra has breathable padded cups to enhance rather than squash your bust and adjustable straps and is made from moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics that will hold everything in place comfortably.
Buy: £28, sizes 32-36 A-D. Boobydoo.co.uk.
Available from September, Anita’s DynamiX Star sports bra is already an award winner, as it was recently the recipient of the Red Dot Design Award 2014. It’s a maximum support racer back bra with a difference, featuring specially designed Power X cross straps that provide great stability for the bust but allow the wearer to take it on and off easily. The brand has created a video to show just how easy it is. The straps are also positioned wide on the shoulders for this style of bra to reduce the build up of tension. It comes in a choice of white/metallic (pictured) or peacock/anthracite.
Buy: £52, available from September in sizes 32-40 A-E, 32-38F and 32-36G. Stockists will include Figleaves.com and JolieLingerie.co.uk.
Another new style this season comes from Panache Sport and it’s a non-wired version of the brand’s popular sports bra (pictured left) for lower impact activities such as yoga and pilates. It offers many of the familiar features of the wired version, such as wide cushioned straps with a racer back converter and encapsulating foam cups for an uplifted and separated bust shape, combined with the comfort of a wirefree design. It also has a cushioned hook and eye back fastening for comfort doing floor exercises.
The non-wired sports bra, and the existing wired version, are both available in a cool geometric print for the new season, and fans of bright colours will love the zingy new lime and aqua combo in the wired bra (pictured right). This is a great bra for high impact activities and is specially designed for fuller busts, however it does now go all the way down a B cup in some back sizes.
Buy: The non-wired bra and the sports bra in lime are due out soon and come in sizes 28 D-H, 30 DD-H, 32 C-H, 34-38 B-H and 40 D-H. See the Panache website for stockists. The wired sports bra in geometric is available now for £38 from Figleaves.com.
At the start of the year Freya Active launched its most exciting sports bra innovation to date, the Active Crop Top Sports Bra, and now the brand is launching it in fabulous new colour Pink Glow in October – perfect for those who want a more feminine look. The Active Crop Top Sports bra took six years to develop and aims to reduce both breast movement and pain during exercise. The bra has been extensively tested, revealing a reduction in breast pain of up to 97% for cup sizes 32FF to 36E compared with wearing no bra. The crop top style is cut high to encapsulate the upper breast, which is a common area for pain.
Buy: From October, £40, 28-32 D-H, 34-36 B-H, 38 B-GG and 40 B-G. Stockists will include Leia Lingerie, which also stocks the crop top in current shades blue and black.
Designed specifically to meet the needs of fuller figures, Elomi’s Energise sports bra has had a bit of a revamp this season, as well as coming out in a great new colour, pomegranate. The bra is cut high at the front and features wide side wings for control and comfort with an attractive scoop back. The new version features a multiway J hook which allows the straps to be worn as a racer back for those who find this arrangement gives them greater support. It is available up to a J cup and a 46 back.
Buy: £34, 34GG-J, 36 DD-J, 38 D-J, 40 D-HH, 42 D-H, 44 D-GG, 46 D-DD. Leia Lingerie.
Another brand releasing bright new colours this season is Scandinavian sportswear brand Pure Lime. The high impact Compression Bra, which features moulded seamfree cups that encapsulate the breasts and hold them in place, is available now in limited edition red, and will also soon be out in purple, a colour that has been launched to raise money for the Danish Cancer Society. Each one will be sold with a pink ribbon badge and 10% of the proceeds of the sale will go to the charity.
